Hotels with a calendar rather than an address book: built when the cold arrives, gone by spring.

Iglu-Dorf Gstaad

Gstaad, Switzerland

Iglu-Dorf builds its Gstaad village high above the resort each winter, and the whole thing is carved from snow after the first reliable falls. Sleeping chambers are cut by hand, some plainly finished, others sculpted in relief, and the entire structure is allowed to melt away in spring rather than being dismantled.

A night here is a cold-weather exercise rather than a conventional hotel stay: expedition sleeping bags, insulated mats, a communal area for hot food, and a sunrise on the slopes that most guests name as the reason they came. The village is reachable by lift and a short walk, which keeps the logistics simple even though the accommodation is not.
